Can we create an aero sock that excels primarily as a high-quality sock? Josh collaborated with a renowned Italian team known for producing some of the world’s finest socks using advanced knitting technology. The aim was to design a knit sock that stays securely in place and features a blend of smooth and textured surfaces to optimize airflow around the lower leg. The outcome is a sock that delivers aerodynamic performance comparable to ribbed lycra cuff socks while maintaining all the essential qualities expected from a cycling sock. Following positive feedback on comfort, we extended the cuff to 19.5cm to meet the UCI height limit for most riders, enhancing its aerodynamic advantage.
The technology: Using specialized knitting machinery, we create a sock with a smooth front surface that promotes laminar airflow, enhanced by three rows of turbulators positioned just before the flow separation point. These turbulators generate small vortices within the boundary layer, which help maintain airflow attachment further along the leg. Improved flow attachment reduces the pressure wake behind the leg, resulting in lower drag. Testing at speeds between 30-45 kph shows a drag reduction of 4-8 watts compared to standard socks, matching the performance of ribbed lycra socks of similar height.
SILCA aero socks are crafted from Q-Skin, a polyamide infused with silver ions that provides antibacterial and odor-resistant properties. This material also offers superior softness and moisture management compared to typical sock yarns. These socks combine high performance with exceptional comfort, making them some of the most comfortable socks you’ll ever wear.
