Addressing these challenges, Zipp implemented its Total System Efficiency philosophy tailored for gravel riding. The 303 XPLR S is a gravel wheel engineered with speed as the priority, adopting a novel approach: beginning with the ideal gravel tire and building the wheel around it. In creating this groundbreaking wheelset, Zipp’s engineers analyzed the evolution of gravel racing and identified several key insights that shaped its design. 

1. The progression of gravel speeds increases the importance of aerodynamic efficiency.

2. Current generation gravel wheels exhibit poor aerodynamic efficiency with gravel tires.

3. Low tire pressures arethe key for unlocking speed on gravel, but current gravel rim design providesinsufficient tire stance to support lateral cornering loads at lower tire pressures.

4. Current gravel rim designs do not help prevent pinch flats while using lower tire pressures. Typical tire widths for gravel racing range from 38-50mm with varying tread patterns.

Most gravel wheels feature an external rim width of 28-30mm, which creates aerodynamic inefficiencies when paired with 40mm or wider gravel tires. This combination results in a tire-wheel profile resembling a bulbous shape rather than a smooth airfoil. Zipp’s testing shows that the 303 XPLR S, designed for optimal integration with gravel tires, delivers a 5-watt aerodynamic gain over top competitors. It is specifically optimized for use with the Goodyear XPLR Slick and Goodyear XPLR Inter tires, developed in collaboration with Zipp. The wider tire bed of the 303 XPLR S supports lower tire pressures without tire collapse during cornering, reducing vibration loss while maintaining control and traction. Additionally, its rim edge is 77% thicker than previous models, lowering the risk of pinch flats from impacts. Contrary to traditional beliefs favoring shallow rims for gravel, the 303 XPLR S features a 54mm deep rim, ideal for aerodynamic efficiency at race speeds above 35kph, perfectly matching the 40mm tire profile.
