The Zipp 303 XPLR S offers a significant speed boost for gravel cyclists without a hefty cost. Drawing from innovations in our top-tier wide gravel wheelset, it delivers durability and performance tailored for serious gravel enthusiasts. Featuring an ultra-wide rim designed to perfectly match approved gravel racing tires, this wheelset leads in gravel speed.* Unlike typical gravel wheels, which are adapted road wheels prioritizing stiffness and lightness, Zipp focuses exclusively on maximizing speed by addressing rolling resistance, vibration damping, and aerodynamic drag on rough terrain.
To address these challenges, Zipp implemented its Total System Efficiency design philosophy tailored specifically for gravel riding. The 303 XPLR S is a gravel wheel engineered with speed as the priority, adopting a novel approach: beginning with the ideal gravel tire and building the wheel around it. In creating this groundbreaking wheelset, Zipp’s engineers analyzed the evolution of gravel racing and drew several key insights.
1. The progression of gravel speeds increases the importance of aerodynamic efficiency.
2. Current generation gravel wheels exhibit poor aerodynamic efficiency with gravel tires.
3. Low tire pressures arethe key for unlocking speed on gravel, but current gravel rim design providesinsufficient tire stance to support lateral cornering loads at lower tire pressures.
4. Current gravel rim designs do not help prevent pinch flats while using lower tire pressures.
Gravel racing tires typically range from 38 to 50mm in width with diverse tread patterns. Most gravel wheels feature an external rim width of 28-30mm, causing an aerodynamic mismatch when paired with tires over 40mm wide. This combination creates a tire-wheel interface resembling a bulbous shape rather than a smooth airfoil. Zipp’s testing shows that the 303 XPLR S’s optimized wheel and tire pairing delivers a 5-watt aerodynamic gain compared to a top competitor. Designed for use with Goodyear XPLR Slick and Inter tires—developed in collaboration with Zipp—this wheelset supports lower tire pressures without compromising cornering stability, thanks to its wide tire bed that prevents tire collapse and squirm. The rim edge is 77% thicker than previous models, reducing pinch flats by protecting against rim damage during impacts. Contrary to traditional beliefs favoring shallow rims for gravel, the 303 XPLR S features a 54mm rim depth, ideal for aerodynamic efficiency at race speeds exceeding 35kph. This depth creates the optimal aspect ratio for a 40mm tire at high velocity.
*Note: The 303 XPLR S is compatible only with approved tires, specifically the Goodyear XPLR Slick and Inter models.
