The Zipp 303 XPLR SW wheelset represents our fastest gravel wheel to date, featuring an extra-wide and deep rim engineered to perfectly complement gravel tires. Unlike typical gravel wheels, which are adapted from road designs prioritizing stiffness and weight, Zipp’s approach centers exclusively on maximizing speed. Gravel riding challenges like rolling resistance, surface vibrations, and wind drag significantly impact velocity. Addressing these, Zipp’s Total System Efficiency philosophy is tailored specifically for gravel conditions. The 303 XPLR SW is a speed-optimized gravel wheel developed by starting with the ideal gravel tire and building the wheel around it.
To develop this first-of-its-kind wheelset, Zipp engineers learned from studying how gravel racing has changed cycling in recent years, coming to several vital conclusions:
1. The progression of gravel speeds increases the importance of aerodynamic efficiency.
2. Current generation gravel wheels exhibit poor aerodynamic efficiency with gravel tires.
3. Low tire pressures are the key for unlocking speed on gravel, but current gravel rim design provides insufficient tire stance to support lateral cornering loads at lower tire pressures.
4. Current gravel rim designs do not help prevent pinch flats while using lower tire pressures.
Gravel racing tires typically range from 38 to 50mm in width with diverse tread patterns, while most gravel wheels feature an external rim width of 28-30mm. This narrower rim paired with wider tires creates an aerodynamic mismatch, resembling a lightbulb bulge rather than a smooth airfoil shape. Zipp’s 303 XPLR SW wheelset addresses this by optimizing the tire-wheel interface, delivering a 5-watt aerodynamic gain over top competitors. Designed for use with Goodyear XPLR Slick and Inter tires, it supports lower tire pressures without tire collapse during cornering thanks to its wide tire bed. This wider stance reduces vibration loss, enhances cornering control, and maintains traction on climbs. Additionally, the rim edge is 77% thicker than previous models, reducing pinch flat risk. With a 54mm rim depth, the 303 XPLR SW balances aerodynamic efficiency and stability at race speeds exceeding 35kph, perfectly matching the profile of 40mm gravel tires.
