Frequently Asked Questions

How do Electric Skateboards work?

Most e-boards are controlled with a remote that the rider uses. This remote controls your speed, your board set up and gives you valuable information about your performance including battery life and rider mode. This controller is linked to your skateboard and you use it to start and stop. It controls the power from your battery to your motors.

Are Electric Skateboards hard to ride?

While they can be a little tricky at the start most riders get the hang of riding an E-Board within 10-15 mins. Skateboard riders who have used non-motorised skateboards can normally pick it up instantly.

Do you have to wear a Helmet on an Electric Skateboard?

While the rules are a little grey here, Crooze recommends wearing a helmet always for safety. If you are riding a high performance e-board we suggest a full face helmet and other body protection, including wrist guards and elbow pads.

What is the difference between belt drive, hub drive and direct drive in electric skateboards?

Hub Drives motors are embedded in the wheel itself. While this is common, it has its’ downfalls if you want change at your wheel type. The motor applies the torque directly within the wheel. It’s a simple option with the motor and wheel spinning as 1 unit, with a 1 to 1 ratio. 1 spin of the motor = 1 spin of the wheel.

The trade off with hub motor skateboard is that the braking is not as good but energy efficiency is great, and they are much quieter than a belt motor.

Belt Drive Motors are the original Electric Skateboard system and uses belts and gears to drive you forward. Advantages include greater torque, better breaking, but louder noise and no free roll. So when you come off the power you will slow much quicker. Belt drive requires some more maintenance however these parts are normally inexpensive and easy to replace yourself.

The least common, but becoming more popular, is the direct drive motor. Unlike the hub drive the direct drive motor is located just inside the wheel attached to your skateboard trucks. The biggest advantage here is that you can easily switch out your wheels to suit your riding style. The motors are very efficient, creating good levels of torque.

Are Electric Skateboards Legal in Australia?

The Rules are for ever changing so we suggest you visit your local states official website to find out what the current laws are in your area.

Can you ride Electric Skateboards in the bike paths?

Currently no laws outlining this. We think that soon the bike paths should be available to everyone. Be respectful to other riders and you should not have a problem.

Can you ride an electric skateboard in the Rain?

We don’t recommend using your e-board in the rain. Its slippery when its wet and the general rule of thumb is that water and electricity don’t mix. Your board is low to the ground and there is significant opportunity for water to get inside your board which will cause major damage. Boards that have water damage are not covered by warranty. Many Electric Skateboard manufactures do not disclose an IP rating for their boards so you simply just don’t know. If you must ride in the rain consider the Exway X1 Pro that at least has an IP 55 rating wish allows for light splashing and dust.

How fast do electric skateboards go?

Some e-boards can exceed speeds of 65 Km/H however this is depending on rider weight, terrain, and wheel size. Beginners should start off slow and always wear protective equipment.

How long does an electric skateboard last?

If you look after your board with good battery maintenance you can get between 350 and 1000 charge cycles. We all ride differently but in a real world test expect your battery to last between one and three years.

Do Electric skateboards have brakes?

Yes your brakes are controlled by your handheld remote and can bring you to a safe stop. Practice riding your board at lower speeds to get used to the feel of your brakes before attempting to ride at speeds faster than 20 Km/H.

Are Electric Skateboards safe?

Electric skateboarding is an extreme sports activity and the risks of injury are real. Accidents happen so we encourage riders to ride safely in groups. Wear crash helmets and be sensible when choosing locations to ride.

Can you ride an Electric Skateboard without power?

This will depend on your board set up, whether you are using belts, Hub or direct drive will determine if you can ride your eboard if it has no power.
Belt Drives cannot be ridden without power.

Hub drives and direct drives have little resistance and can be easily ridden without battery power.

What is the cheapest Electric skateboard?

If you are looking at a cheap electric skateboard we believe that the Exway boards offer the best value for money.
